Hondarribi Zuri is an indigenous white grape variety predominantly cultivated in the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, especially in the appellations of Getariako Txakolina, Bizkaiko Txakolina, and Arabako Txakolina. The grape is renowned for producing fresh, crisp wines with pronounced acidity. On the nose, Hondarribi Zuri reveals delicate aromas of green apple, citrus fruits (notably lemon and grapefruit), white flowers, and subtle herbal nuances. The palate is light-bodied and vibrant, marked by its energetic minerality and a characteristic saline note, reflecting the maritime influence of the region.
Hondarribi Zuri is most famously used in the production of Txakoli, a slightly sparkling, low-alcohol wine with a refreshing, zesty finish. These wines are typically dry, lively, and best enjoyed young to preserve their vivacity.
Food pairings are centred around the region’s gastronomy; Hondarribi Zuri-based wines pair excellently with fresh seafood, shellfish, sushi, and light salads. Their crisp acidity also complements pintxos, soft cheeses, and lightly fried fish, highlighting the grape’s versatility and enhancing the overall dining experience.
