Hondarrabi Beltza is a rare and indigenous red grape variety primarily cultivated in Spain’s Basque Country, especially within the DO Getariako Txakolina, as well as some western parts of the French Basque area. This grape produces wines with a distinctive aromatic profile, featuring bright red cherry, raspberry, wild strawberry, and subtle herbaceous notes often reminiscent of fresh thyme and green peppercorn. On the palate, Hondarrabi Beltza delivers light to medium body, moderate acidity, and soft tannins, making for an elegant and refreshing drinking experience. While the variety is mainly vinified to produce dry, youthful reds, it is also used in the creation of traditional sparkling Txakoli wines, enhancing their vibrancy and aromatic lift. Stylistically, wines from Hondarrabi Beltza often exhibit a vibrant ruby colour, lively fruit character, and a slightly saline finish, reflecting their coastal terroir. Ideal food pairings include grilled local fish such as tuna or anchovies, Basque-style grilled meats, charcuterie, and dishes featuring roasted peppers or olives. Its fresh acidity and subtle structure also harmonise well with lightly spiced dishes and aged cheeses typical of the Basque region.
