Mazuelo, internationally recognised as Cariñena, is a red grape variety highly esteemed for its role in reinforcing structure and ageing potential in wines. Aromatically, Mazuelo imparts vibrant notes of dark fruits such as blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, underpinned by hints of black pepper, liquorice, and occasionally herbal nuances. On the palate, it showcases pronounced acidity, robust tannins, and a refreshing minerality, often complemented by spicy undertones and a subtle earthy complexity.
The grape thrives in hot, arid climates and finds its principal homes in Spain’s Rioja and Priorat regions, as well as the historical Cariñena DO in Aragon. Internationally, it is cultivated in southern France, where it is known as Carignan, particularly in the Languedoc-Roussillon area.
Typical wine styles range from complex, full-bodied single varietals to structured blends, where Mazuelo contributes depth and longevity. Wines crafted from Mazuelo are most often aged in oak, enhancing texture and introducing savoury, woody notes.
Recommended food pairings include rich, slow-cooked dishes such as lamb stew, braised beef, and game, as well as mature hard cheeses. Its firm acidity and bold character make it an excellent match for hearty Mediterranean cuisine.
