Mazuelo, also known internationally as Carignan, is a red grape variety prized for its vibrant acidity, robust tannins, and deep colouring. Its aromatic profile is marked by lively red and black fruit notes—think blackberry, black cherry, and cranberry—interwoven with hints of liquorice, black pepper, and earthy undertones. On the palate, Mazuelo wines are typically full-bodied and structured, offering refreshing acidity and a characteristic, slightly rustic edge that lends itself well to ageing.
Originating from Spain, Mazuelo is particularly prevalent in regions such as Rioja, where it is often blended to add structure and longevity to Tempranillo-based wines. It is also a mainstay in the south of France, especially in Languedoc and Roussillon, under the name Carignan, as well as in parts of Sardinia (as Carignano) and California.
Mazuelo is commonly crafted into robust red blends, but it can also be found as a varietal wine, displaying notable depth and complexity. Its animated acidity and tannic backbone make it an ideal partner for grilled or slow-cooked meats, game dishes, hard cheeses, and Mediterranean fare, especially lamb or richly spiced foods.
