Dona Blanca is a distinctive white grape variety predominantly cultivated in the northwest of Spain, especially in the DOs of Bierzo, Valdeorras, Monterrei, and Ribeiro, as well as in certain Portuguese regions such as Dão and Douro (where it is known as Doña Branca). Wines crafted from Dona Blanca are characteristically fresh and lively, offering a medium to light body and a zesty acidity.
The aromatic profile is notably floral, with prominent notes of white blossom, citrus peel, and green apple, complemented by subtle hints of quince and herbs. On the palate, Dona Blanca wines deliver crisp flavours of pear, lemon, and often a mineral edge which accentuates their refreshing nature. Some examples exhibit a touch of salinity and light bitterness on the finish, enhancing their complexity.
Dona Blanca is typically made into still white wines, though it also features in blends and some sparkling styles in indigenous winemaking traditions. Its natural acidity makes it an excellent partner for seafood—particularly shellfish—as well as fresh goat’s cheese, grilled vegetables, and lightly spiced poultry dishes. Enjoyed chilled, Dona Blanca offers a versatile and elegant pairing to a range of Mediterranean and Iberian cuisines.
