Bastardo, also known as Trousseau in France, is a red grape variety prized for its aromatic complexity and versatility. The grape typically delivers medium-bodied wines with a distinctive, perfumed bouquet, expressing notes of wild red berries, black cherry, violet, and hints of earthy spice. On the palate, Bastardo wines strike a balance between fresh acidity and supple tannins, often culminating in a silken texture with subtle mineral elements on the finish.
Primarily associated with the Dão and Douro regions of Portugal, Bastardo also features in the fortified wines of Madeira and finds a celebrated expression in the Jura region of France. In Spain, it appears in Galicia as Merenzao. These diverse terroirs contribute to the grape’s unique stylistic range.
Bastardo wines are produced as single varietal bottlings, but the grape is frequently blended, especially in the context of traditional Portuguese red wines and rare vintage Ports. The wines are generally enjoyed young for their freshness, but examples from top producers can benefit from short to medium-term ageing.
Recommended pairings include roast duck, braised game birds, grilled pork, or earthy mushroom dishes, all of which harmonise well with Bastardo’s bright fruit and finesse.
