The grape variety Xarel-lo

Xarel-lo is a distinguished white grape variety primarily cultivated in Catalonia, Spain, particularly within the Penedès region. Highly esteemed for its role in the production of Cava, Spain’s renowned sparkling wine, Xarel-lo displays resilience to heat and drought, thriving in Mediterranean climates.

On the nose, Xarel-lo typically presents a vibrant aromatic profile featuring green apple, pear, citrus blossom, and fennel, complemented by subtle herbaceous and mineral undertones. On the palate, the grape is recognised for its refreshing acidity, medium body, and a pleasing texture, often revealing flavours of grapefruit, lime, white peach, and hints of aniseed. When crafted into oak-aged or skin-contact styles, Xarel-lo can develop additional layers of complexity, including nutty, honeyed, or saline notes.

While Xarel-lo is best known as a key blending grape in traditional method sparkling Cava, it is increasingly vinified as a varietal wine, both still and sparkling. These diverse expressions range from crisp and youthful to structured and age-worthy.
