Picapoll, also known as Picpoul in France, is a distinguished white grape variety native to Catalonia, particularly thriving in the DO Pla de Bages and the DO Costers del Segre regions of northeastern Spain. The variety is renowned for producing wines with a pale straw hue and a vibrant aromatic profile. On the nose, Picapoll offers delicate notes of fresh peach, green apple, citrus blossom and subtle herbal undertones, often complemented by mineral nuances reflective of its terroir. On the palate, Picapoll wines display a crisp, lively acidity, medium body, and refreshing flavours of lime, pear, and white grapefruit, with a distinctively clean, saline finish.
Beyond Spain, Picapoll is closely associated with the southern French appellation of Picpoul de Pinet, where it yields similarly vibrant and zesty wines. Typically vinified as a dry, unoaked white, Picapoll showcases expressive fruit and purity, occasionally experimenting with lees ageing to add texture and complexity.
Thanks to its marked acidity and freshness, Picapoll pairs exceptionally well with seafood, particularly shellfish, grilled white fish, and Mediterranean dishes featuring olive oil and fresh herbs. It also complements light poultry dishes and soft goat’s cheese, making it a versatile choice for contemporary cuisine.
