Poulsard, an indigenous grape variety from France’s Jura region, is celebrated for its distinctive pale-hued wines displaying delicate charm and subtle complexity. On the nose, Poulsard reveals an aromatic profile brimming with red berries—think wild strawberry, raspberry, and redcurrant—intertwined with floral nuances of rose petal and gentle earthy undertones. The palate is marked by light body, vibrant acidity, and finely textured tannins, culminating in a fresh, lively finish that showcases elegance rather than power.
Primarily cultivated in Jura, particularly around Arbois and Pupillin, Poulsard thrives in the region’s marly and limestone soils. While it is most often vinified as a single varietal red, it also features in local blends and is occasionally used to produce delicate rosé and sparkling Crémant du Jura wines. Typical Poulsard wines are light in colour with luminous translucency, understated fruitiness, and subtle spice.
Its refined character makes Poulsard highly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with charcuterie, roast poultry, white meats, soft cheeses such as Mont d’Or, and mushroom-based dishes. Lightly chilled, it can also complement grilled vegetables and Asian-inspired cuisine, accentuating both freshness and nuance.
