Garnacha Tinta, known internationally as Grenache, is a versatile red grape variety cherished for its expressive character. In the glass, it typically delivers a medium to full body with a vibrant aromatic profile, featuring ripe red berries such as strawberry and raspberry, complemented by hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and subtle notes of liquorice and violets. With age, earthy undertones and a touch of dried fruit can emerge, adding complexity.
Prominent in Spain—particularly Rioja, Aragón, and Priorat—Garnacha Tinta also thrives in the Southern Rhône Valley of France and parts of Australia and California. It forms the backbone of many classic blends, notably Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as well as characterful single varietal wines.
The grape lends itself to a variety of wine styles, from fresh, fruit-driven rosés to robust reds with moderate tannins and appealing warmth from elevated alcohol. It is also instrumental in the production of fortified wines, particularly in southern France.
Food pairings are diverse; Garnacha Tinta’s juicy fruit and subtle spice harmonise with grilled meats, lamb, charcuterie, and roasted Mediterranean vegetables. Its softness and versatility make it an excellent companion for both rustic and refined fare, especially dishes flavoured with herbs and mild spices.
