Rufete is a red grape variety native to the Iberian Peninsula, predominantly grown in Spain’s Salamanca province, particularly the Sierra de Salamanca DO, as well as in parts of Portugal’s Douro region. This grape is esteemed for its complex aromatic profile, marked by delicate floral notes reminiscent of violets, along with bright red fruits such as wild strawberries, raspberries and cherries. Subtle hints of fresh herbs and a gentle spiciness may also be present, contributing to a layered bouquet.
On the palate, Rufete wines are typically light to medium-bodied with refreshing acidity and silky, unobtrusive tannins. The flavour profile complements the nose, with lively red fruit supported by gentle earthy undertones. These wines often display moderate alcohol levels and a refined, elegant structure.
Rufete is most commonly vinified as a single varietal, though it may be blended in traditional Douro field blends. It is well-suited to both young, unoaked styles that showcase its aromatic charm, and more structured, lightly oaked examples.
Recommended food pairings include grilled poultry, herbed pork, cured meats, and a range of Mediterranean dishes, where Rufete’s freshness and finesse beautifully accentuate savoury flavours without overwhelming the palate.
