White Grapes

Macabeo, known as Viura in Rioja, is a versatile white grape variety highly valued in Spanish winemaking. It presents a delicate aromatic profile, often displaying notes of green apple, citrus, white blossom, and subtle herbal nuances. On the palate, Macabeo typically offers a fresh, medium-bodied texture with vibrant acidity, complemented by hints of pear, lemon zest, and occasionally a discreet almond finish, particularly in more mature expressions.

Predominantly grown in northeastern Spain, Macabeo finds its home in regions such as Rioja, Catalonia, and Aragon. It is notably the principal white grape in white Rioja wines and forms the backbone of Cava production in Catalonia, frequently blended with Xarel·lo and Parellada.

Macabeo excels in a variety of wine styles, from youthful, crisp whites to richly textured, barrel-aged examples that develop complexity and depth over time. As a sparkling base, it contributes freshness and finesse, while in still wines it can range from lively and floral to creamy and layered.

Pairing recommendations include fresh seafood, grilled white fish, shellfish, and mild cheeses. It also complements light poultry dishes, rice-based cuisine such as paella, or Mediterranean salads, thanks to its balance and refreshing character.
