Garnacha Tintorera, also known as Alicante Bouschet, is a distinctive red grape variety renowned for its deeply coloured flesh and skin, which impart an intense, almost inky hue to the wines. Its aromatic profile is marked by ripe black fruits such as blackberry and black cherry, often underpinned by subtle notes of forest floor, violets, and a gentle spice, sometimes complemented by a hint of earthiness. On the palate, wines made from Garnacha Tintorera display rich, juicy fruit flavours, robust tannins, and a pleasing freshness that balances their full body and depth, often with a lingering, slightly savoury finish.
The grape thrives in Spain’s south-eastern regions, particularly in Almansa, Manchuela, and parts of Castilla-La Mancha, as well as in neighbouring Portugal and limited areas of southern France. It is typically blended to add depth and colour, but increasingly shines in varietal expressions. Style-wise, Garnacha Tintorera produces bold, concentrated reds with strong structure, ideal for ageing, as well as fresher, fruit-forward wines made for earlier consumption.
These wines pair exceptionally well with hearty dishes such as roasted lamb, game, and aged cheeses, and also complement rich stews or chargrilled red meats, enhancing both the flavour and texture of the meal.
