Malvasía Aromática is a distinguished white grape variety celebrated for its intensely perfumed, floral character and vibrant palate. On the nose, it offers pronounced aromas of orange blossom, jasmine, rose petals, and exotic fruits such as lychee and peach, often complemented by subtle hints of honey and Mediterranean herbs. The palate typically presents a harmonious balance between lively acidity and a gently rounded texture, carrying expressive flavours of ripe stone fruits, citrus, and delicate spice.
This grape is primarily cultivated in Spain’s Canary Islands, most notably on Lanzarote and La Palma, where the volcanic soils enhance its aromatic complexity. It is also found in select vineyards across mainland Spain and Portugal, thriving in warm, sun-drenched climates.
Malvasía Aromática is utilised in both dry and sweet wine styles. Dry expressions are refreshing, aromatic, and occasionally offer a slight saline note, while sweet styles—often made from late-harvested or sun-dried grapes—highlight its lush, honeyed qualities.
These wines pair exceptionally well with aromatic Asian cuisine, seafood dishes such as grilled prawns or octopus, mildly spiced chicken, and semi-soft cheeses like Manchego. For sweet versions, try accompanying fruit tarts, blue cheeses, or salted almonds to enhance and contrast the wine’s distinctive profile.
