Verdello is a white grape variety principally grown in the regions of Umbria and Tuscany in central Italy. Often confused with the similarly named Verdelho, Verdello stands out for its fresh, vibrant character. The aromatic profile of Verdello offers delicate notes of green apple, pear, and wild herbs, sometimes accompanied by subtle floral hints and a faint touch of citrus zest. On the palate, it tends to deliver lively acidity, medium body, and a lively freshness, often balancing crisp fruit flavours with nuances of almond and an elegant mineral backbone.
Verdello is predominantly used in Umbrian blends such as Orvieto DOC, where it contributes freshness and aromatic lift alongside Grechetto and Trebbiano. The wines made from Verdello are typically youthful, unoaked, and focused on expressing purity and varietal clarity.
Verdello-based wines pair exceptionally well with light fish dishes, seafood risottos, and fresh goats’ cheese, where their natural acidity enhances delicate flavours. They also complement traditional Umbrian fare such as grilled vegetables, light pasta dishes with olive oil and herbs, and antipasti. These wines are best enjoyed young to appreciate their vibrant and refreshing character.
