Carrasquín is an indigenous red grape variety primarily found in the Asturias region of northern Spain. Distinguished by its rarity, Carrasquín wines display a unique aromatic profile marked by ripe red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, complemented by subtle floral and wild herb nuances. On the palate, Carrasquín tends to offer medium body and fresh acidity, delivering flavours of forest fruits, a hint of liquorice, and gentle earthy undertones. Tannins are typically soft, contributing to a smooth, supple mouthfeel.
The principal winegrowing area for Carrasquín is the Cangas DO, where it often plays a leading role in both varietal expressions and blends. Traditional vinification methods bring out the grape’s distinct character, resulting in wines that reflect the region’s cool climate and slate-laden soils.
Carrasquín wines are generally crafted in a youthful, fruit-driven style, although some producers experiment with oak-ageing to add complexity. These wines pair exceptionally well with Asturian specialities such as cured sausages, roasted lamb, and hearty bean stews. They also complement grilled vegetables and semi-cured cheeses, making them an excellent choice for a range of rustic, flavourful dishes.
