The grape variety Macabeo

Macabeo, also known as Viura in Rioja, is a versatile white grape variety prized for its fresh, vibrant character. Aromatically, Macabeo presents delicate floral notes of white blossom, complemented by citrus fruits such as lemon and grapefruit, and subtle hints of green apple and almond. On the palate, wines made from Macabeo typically exhibit crisp acidity, light to medium body, and a clean, refreshing finish. Ageing in oak can introduce nuances of vanilla, toast, and gentle spice, broadening the profile and adding complexity.

Macabeo thrives in the wine regions of northeastern Spain, notably Rioja, Catalonia, and the Penedès, as well as in the Languedoc-Roussillon area of southern France. It is foundational in the production of Cava, Spain’s renowned sparkling wine, and figures prominently in still whites, especially those of Rioja and Costers del Segre.
