Mazuela, also known internationally as Carignan, is a red grape variety predominantly cultivated in the warmer viticultural regions of Spain, particularly in Rioja and Catalonia. This variety is renowned for its deep colour, robust tannic structure and pronounced acidity. Aromatically, Mazuela offers an intriguing profile marked by notes of dark fruits such as black cherry, plum, and blackberry, accompanied by subtle hints of liquorice, black pepper, and Mediterranean herbs. On the palate, it typically delivers an intense flavour with vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and a lingering, slightly earthy finish.
Mazuela is traditionally used as a blending grape, especially in Rioja, where it adds backbone and ageing potential to the region’s classic Tempranillo-based wines. In Catalonia, particularly in Priorat, Mazuela is vinified both as a single varietal and in blends, producing powerful, concentrated wines that often benefit from bottle ageing.
Recommended food pairings include roasted lamb, game, hearty stews, and aged hard cheeses, which complement the grape's bold structure and acidity. Its robust nature also pairs well with rich, tomato-based dishes and chargrilled meats, highlighting the depth and complexity of the wine.
