Moscatel de Alejandría, also known as Muscat of Alexandria, is an ancient grape variety highly esteemed for its pronounced aromatic intensity. This grape exudes expressive notes of orange blossom, rose petals, ripe peach, apricot, and a distinctive musky undertone. On the palate, its lively flavours are complemented by a fresh, medium acidity, often balanced by a touch of sweetness and a lingering aromatic finish.
Moscatel de Alejandría thrives in warm, Mediterranean climates with notable plantings in Southern Spain—particularly in Andalucia and Valencia—as well as coastal regions of Portugal, Italy (notably Sicily), and parts of North Africa and South America.
The variety is exceptionally versatile, producing a broad array of wine styles. These range from dry and off-dry aromatic whites to celebrated sweet wines, such as Spanish Moscatel, fortified examples from Málaga and Valencia, and luscious dessert wines with sun-dried grapes.
Food pairings are diverse; dry styles harmonise with spicy Asian dishes, fresh seafood, and goat’s cheese, while sweeter expressions pair elegantly with fruit-based desserts, blue cheeses, and almond pastries, elevating both the wine and the dish to new heights of enjoyment.
