Red Grape Variety

Grand Noir de la Calmette is a traditional red grape variety with origins in France, notable for its deep colour and versatility. On the nose, wines made from Grand Noir de la Calmette express enticing aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, and black cherry, often complemented by notes of gentle spice, subtle earthiness, and hints of violet. The palate is typically medium-bodied, offering supple tannins and moderate acidity. Flavours are fruit-driven, showing juicy dark berries with a touch of smokiness and a slightly rustic, peppery finish.

This grape is primarily grown in the South of France—especially in the Languedoc and southern Rhône regions—though it also finds a home in Spain and, to a lesser extent, in Portugal. Grand Noir de la Calmette is most commonly produced as part of blends, contributing colour and structure, but also appears in varietal bottlings, particularly in innovative or experimental cuvées.

The wines pair exceptionally well with grilled meats, especially lamb and beef, as well as rustic charcuterie, hearty stews, and mature hard cheeses. Its robust fruit and spice notes make it an excellent companion to Mediterranean cuisine, such as ratatouille or dishes seasoned with herbes de Provence.
