Rkaciteli is an ancient white grape variety originating from Georgia and widely regarded as one of the world’s oldest cultivated vinifera vines. Its aromatic profile is characterised by delicate notes of green apple, quince, and subtle floral hints, often complemented by underlying spicy and herbaceous elements such as fennel and white pepper. On the palate, Rkaciteli wines typically display a crisp acidity with flavours of citrus, pear, and stone fruits, resulting in a refreshing and balanced mouthfeel with a minerally, sometimes slightly saline finish.
The principal wine regions for Rkaciteli include Georgia's Kakheti region, where it is most prolific, as well as parts of Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, and, increasingly, the Finger Lakes in New York State. The variety excels in both traditional Georgian qvevri (amphora) wines, which can display amber hues and tannic structure, and more conventional dry white wines, which highlight its pure, zesty character.
Rkaciteli pairs exceptionally well with grilled fish, poultry, creamy cheeses, and Mediterranean cuisine featuring fresh herbs. Its naturally vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity also make it a superb partner for lightly spiced dishes and tapas. Rkaciteli's versatility and unique profile continue to captivate wine enthusiasts and sommeliers worldwide.
