Shiroka Melnishka Loza, also known as Broadleafed Melnik, is a rare and indigenous red grape variety predominantly cultivated in the warm, sandy soils of Bulgaria’s Struma River Valley, particularly around the town of Melnik. The grape thrives in this unique microclimate, imbuing the wines with distinctive regional character.
On the nose, Shiroka Melnishka Loza offers a pronounced aromatic profile, revealing layers of ripe cherry, blackcurrant, and dried fig, complemented by subtle hints of oriental spice, leather, and a touch of tobacco. On the palate, these wines are medium to full-bodied, displaying supple tannins, fresh acidity, and flavours of dark berries, plum, and often a savoury nuance. With age, they can develop notes of forest floor, dried herbs, and sweet spice.
Traditionally, the variety is used to craft both varietal and blended red wines, ranging from youthful, fruit-forward expressions to more structured, oak-aged bottlings exhibiting notable complexity and ageing potential.
Shiroka Melnishka Loza pairs beautifully with grilled lamb, venison, hearty stews, and matured Balkan cheeses. Its balance of fruit, spice, and freshness also makes it an excellent match for dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or aromatic herbs.
