Rkatsiteli is an ancient white grape variety originating from Georgia, in the heart of the Caucasus, where it has been cultivated for millennia. It is notable for its lively, crisp acidity and delicate flavour profile. Aromatically, Rkatsiteli often presents a bouquet of green apple, quince, white peach, and subtle floral notes, occasionally accompanied by hints of spice and herbs. On the palate, the wines are typically medium-bodied, refreshingly dry, and display a bright mineral edge with a clean, lingering finish.
The principal regions for Rkatsiteli cultivation include Georgia—especially the Kakheti region—alongside parts of Eastern Europe such as Moldova, Ukraine, and Russia. The grape has also been successfully grown in select vineyards in the USA and Australia.
Rkatsiteli is highly versatile, producing both classic dry table wines and traditional Georgian qvevri wines, which are fermented and aged in clay vessels, often yielding richer textures and complex, savoury nuances. It is sometimes made into sparkling or dessert wines in cooler climates.
For food pairings, Rkatsiteli complements grilled fish, poultry, fresh salads with herbs, mild cheeses, and traditional Georgian dishes such as khachapuri or pkhali, thanks to its zesty structure and subtle fruit character.
