The grape variety Colombard

Colombard is a versatile white grape variety renowned for producing aromatic, refreshing wines. Characterised by lively acidity, Colombard displays an inviting bouquet of green apple, citrus, and fresh pear, often complemented by subtle floral and herbal notes. On the palate, wines offer bright fruit flavours—think grapefruit, lemon zest, and sometimes hints of tropical fruit—with a crisp, zesty finish that accentuates their clean, mouthwatering profile.

Traditionally associated with South-West France, Colombard is a vital component in the production of Cognac and Armagnac. In recent decades, however, it has flourished as a varietal wine in the Gascony region, as well as in South Africa, California, and Australia. These modern expressions showcase Colombard’s innate vibrancy and aromatic potential.

Typical styles range from bone-dry, unoaked whites that highlight freshness and fruit purity, to subtly sweet versions with heightened florality. Colombard is also occasionally blended with other varieties to add liveliness and aromatic lift.
