Red Grape Variety

Valdiguié, sometimes nicknamed ‘Napa Gamay’, is a red grape variety known for producing vibrant, fruit-forward wines with moderate alcohol and refreshing acidity. On the nose, Valdiguié expresses an enticing bouquet of black cherry, juicy blueberry, ripe plum, and wild strawberry, underpinned by floral notes and subtle hints of spice. The palate is typically medium-bodied, with lively red and black fruit flavours balanced by crisp acidity and soft tannins, making for a fresh, approachable style.

Historically prominent in the Languedoc region of southern France, Valdiguié now finds its most notable expressions in California’s cooler wine regions, particularly in Mendocino County and parts of Paso Robles. In France, its plantings have declined, but quality-oriented producers in the New World have revived interest in the grape.

Valdiguié is often crafted as a single-varietal wine or blended to enhance fruitiness and freshness. Winemaking techniques such as carbonic maceration are sometimes employed, lending additional juiciness and aromatic lift, reminiscent of Beaujolais-style reds.

These wines pair beautifully with charcuterie, grilled poultry, roasted vegetables, or mildly spiced dishes. Their bright fruit profile and zesty acidity also complement goat’s cheese, tapas, and picnic fare.
