Garnacha, internationally recognised as Grenache, is a versatile red grape variety renowned for its expressive character and adaptability. On the nose, Garnacha typically reveals vibrant notes of red fruits such as strawberry, raspberry, and cherry, often complemented by subtle hints of white pepper, dried herbs, and spicy nuances. On the palate, it tends to be medium- to full-bodied, showcasing ripe fruit flavours, soft tannins, and moderate acidity, making for wines that are both approachable and complex.
The grape thrives in warm, arid climates, with key wine regions including Spain’s Aragón and Rioja, France’s southern Rhône Valley (notably Châteauneuf-du-Pape), as well as regions in Australia and California. Garnacha forms the backbone of many celebrated blends, particularly in Côtes du Rhône and Priorat, but is increasingly esteemed as a single-varietal wine.
Garnacha wines display impressive versatility, ranging from youthful, juicy reds to structured, age-worthy bottlings, as well as delicate rosés and sweet fortified wines. They pair exceptionally well with a variety of dishes, including grilled meats, roasted vegetables, Mediterranean cuisine, and aged cheeses. Its generous fruit and rounded texture also complement spicy foods and hearty casseroles.
