Red Grape Variety

Blatina is a unique and indigenous red grape variety predominantly grown in Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly thriving in the Herzegovina wine region, including areas around Mostar, Čitluk, and Međugorje. This grape is notable for its challenging nature, being functionally female and requiring companion varieties for pollination, resulting in naturally low yields and concentrated flavours.

Wines produced from Blatina present a vibrant ruby to deep garnet hue. The aromatic profile is elegant and layered, with notes of ripe dark berries, black cherry, and redcurrant, accompanied by accents of dried herbs, subtle floral nuances, and hints of earthiness or tobacco. On the palate, Blatina offers a refined structure, medium body, and balanced acidity. The tannins are present yet supple, providing a silky texture, while flavours echo the bouquet, with additional touches of plum and subtle spice on the finish.

Blatina wines are typically crafted as still dry reds, though some producers experiment with blends or reserve styles. These wines excel as companions to Mediterranean cuisine, grilled red meats, roasted lamb, aged cheeses, or hearty stews, where their fruit-driven profile and lively acidity beautifully complement robust flavours.
