Marawi is an ancient white grape variety native to the Eastern Mediterranean, with deep roots in the Levant and particularly prevalent in the vineyards of Israel and Palestine. Celebrated for its rarity and unique character, Marawi produces aromatic wines marked by delicate floral notes, hints of citrus blossom, green apple, and subtle stone fruit on the nose. On the palate, Marawi wines are typically medium-bodied, exhibiting fresh acidity alongside flavours of pear, white peach, and gentle herbal nuances, often complemented by a clean, mineral-driven finish.
The principal wine-growing areas for Marawi include the Judean Hills and various high-altitude sites across the West Bank, where limestone-rich soils enhance the grape’s natural freshness and minerality. Marawi is predominantly vinified as a single-varietal dry white, although some winemakers explore its potential in blends for added complexity.
Known for its food-friendly profile, Marawi pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean cuisine. It harmonises beautifully with grilled fish, fresh seafood, poultry dishes, herbed salads, and mild cheeses, making it an excellent choice for light starters and summer fare. Its crisp acidity also provides a refreshing counterpoint to richer mezze and subtly spiced dishes from the region.
