Vlahiko is an indigenous red grape variety predominantly grown in the northwestern regions of Greece, particularly in Epirus. This rare varietal is noted for producing wines with a medium ruby hue and a nuanced aromatic profile. On the nose, Vlahiko typically reveals layers of wild berries, black cherries, dried herbs, and subtle earthy undertones, often accompanied by hints of spice and violet. On the palate, it offers medium body, vibrant acidity, and supple tannins, resulting in a well-balanced wine with moderate alcohol levels. Flavours of ripe plum, redcurrant and black pepper evolve gracefully, often complemented by mineral or leathery notes in more traditional expressions.
Vlahiko is commonly vinified either as a single varietal or blended, notably with the local Bekari grape, to enhance structure and complexity. The wines are primarily dry reds, though lighter, softer rosés and occasional sweet styles exist, showcasing the grape’s versatility.
Ideal food pairings include roast lamb, grilled game meats, mushroom risottos, and robust Mediterranean vegetable dishes. The variety’s acidity and earthy character make it an excellent match for dishes characterised by rich flavours and aromatic herbs. Serve slightly chilled to best appreciate its subtleties.
