White Grapes

Plyto is a rare and ancient white grape variety indigenous to Crete, Greece, highly regarded for its capacity to produce elegantly fresh and vibrant wines. Aromatically, Plyto wines typically reveal delicate floral notes, reminiscent of white blossoms and citrus flowers, underpinned by nuances of green apple, ripe pear, and a subtle herbal character. On the palate, they are light to medium-bodied with a lively acidity that delivers a crisp and refreshing profile. Flavours often echo the nose, presenting citrus fruits like lemon and grapefruit, complemented by mineral undertones and a clean, persistent finish.

The primary region for Plyto cultivation is the Heraklion area in central Crete, where the grape benefits from the island’s unique limestone soils and Mediterranean climate. Winemakers predominantly craft Plyto in a dry, unoaked style to emphasise its varietal purity and aromatic finesse. Some innovative producers are also experimenting with limited skin contact or blending to create expressive yet balanced wines.

Plyto pairs excellently with a variety of Mediterranean dishes. It is particularly well matched with grilled seafood, fresh salads, herb-marinated poultry, and soft cheeses. Its vibrant acidity also makes it an ideal partner for dishes featuring citrus vinaigrettes or light fish sauces.
