Dafni is a distinctive indigenous white grape variety predominantly grown on the island of Crete, Greece. Renowned for its unique aromatic profile, Dafni is named after the Greek word for "laurel", an allusion to the grape's signature bouquet of fresh bay leaf, aromatic herbs, and subtle citrus blossom. On the palate, Dafni delivers a lively and zesty character, marked by refreshing acidity, medium body, and complex flavours of green herbs, lime zest, white pepper, and occasionally a hint of salty minerality reflective of Crete’s terroir.
The primary viticultural region for Dafni is Crete, especially in the areas around Heraklion and the smaller vineyards in central Crete, where the Mediterranean climate and limestone soils facilitate optimal ripening. Typically vinified as a varietal wine, Dafni is produced in youthful, unoaked styles to preserve its distinctive aromatic intensity and fresh palate. A small number of producers also experiment with skin contact or barrel maturation, adding further textural complexity.
Dafni pairs exceptionally well with Mediterranean dishes. It complements grilled fish, seafood, fresh green salads, vegetable stews, and delicate cheeses such as feta or goat's cheese. Its herbal notes also make it an excellent match for dishes seasoned with aromatic herbs, creating a harmonious dining experience.
