Red Grape Variety

Odesa Black is a distinctive red grape variety, highly regarded for its deep colour and expressive character. Originating in Ukraine, particularly prevalent in the Odesa region, this grape is a cross between Alicante Bouschet and Cabernet Sauvignon, bringing together the best attributes of both parents. The aromatic profile is intensely perfumed, offering notes of ripe blackberries, cherries, blackcurrant, and plums, complemented by hints of violets, spices, and sometimes a subtle smokiness. On the palate, Odesa Black wines are typically full-bodied, showing robust tannins, refreshing acidity, and layers of dark fruit flavours, harmonised by nuances of liquorice, dark chocolate, and peppery undertones.

Odesa Black is principally cultivated in southern Ukraine, especially around Odesa, but can also be found in Moldova and some experimental vineyards in Eastern Europe. The grape is primarily used to craft dry red wines, though it can excel in blends, contributing depth and colour. Occasionally, Odesa Black is employed in producing stylish rosés and fortified wines.

Food pairings work remarkably well with hearty, meat-based dishes. Roasted or grilled lamb, beef stews, duck breast, and richly spiced Eastern European cuisine are particularly recommended. Aged hard cheeses and aubergine-based dishes also complement the grape’s bold structure and aromatic complexity.
