Sainte-Croix is a modern French hybrid grape variety, renowned for its resilience and adaptability in cooler climates. On the nose, Sainte-Croix wines typically showcase a distinctive aromatic profile with vibrant notes of red cherry, wild raspberry, and subtle blackcurrant, complemented by intriguing earthy undertones and a hint of spice. On the palate, these wines tend to be medium-bodied with supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a pleasingly smooth texture, often reflecting flavours of ripe plum, bramble, and a delicate herbal freshness.
Principally cultivated in southern England and Wales, Sainte-Croix thrives in regions where ripening can be a challenge for traditional vinifera varieties. Its climate adaptability also sees experimental plantings across parts of North America.
Sainte-Croix is most commonly vinified as a single-varietal red, as well as in blends, producing approachable, fruit-forward wines that are generally best enjoyed young. Some producers employ oak ageing to introduce gentle complexity and spice.
The fresh, juicy character of Sainte-Croix makes it an excellent partner for roasted poultry, grilled vegetables, and light game dishes. It also pairs superbly with mildly spiced Mediterranean cuisine and soft, creamy cheeses, offering both versatility and subtlety at the dining table.
