Pálava is an aromatic white grape variety predominantly grown in the Czech Republic, particularly in the Moravia region. This relatively rare grape is a cross between Müller-Thurgau and Gewürztraminer, resulting in wines with a highly expressive and perfumed profile. Pálava wines typically display intense aromas of ripe tropical fruits, rose petals, citrus marmalade, and subtle hints of spice, underpinned by a characteristic floral bouquet.
On the palate, Pálava tends to offer a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, delivering vibrant flavours reminiscent of lychee, grapefruit, honey, and orange blossom. Many examples have a full, rounded mouthfeel with a lingering, slightly spicy finish. The residual sugar can vary, but off-dry and semi-sweet styles are most common, often accompanied by impressive aromatic persistence.
Pálava thrives in the limestone soils of Moravia’s Mikulov subregion, where continental climate conditions help to emphasize its aromatic intensity. Commonly vinified as a single-varietal wine, it is best enjoyed young to capture its freshness, though select late-harvest and botrytised expressions are also crafted.
Pálava pairs exceptionally well with Asian fusion dishes, aromatic curries, fragrant soft cheeses, and lightly spiced seafood, making it a versatile companion at the dining table.
