Molette is a rare and distinctive white grape variety originating from the Savoie region in the French Alps. It is chiefly cultivated in the communes surrounding Seyssel, where it thrives in the region’s cool alpine climate and glacial soils. Molette produces wines with a delicate aromatic profile, marked by bright citrus notes, fresh green apple, and a subtle hint of white flowers, sometimes complemented by nuances of fresh almonds and herbal undertones. On the palate, these wines are typically light-bodied and crisp, offering lively acidity, gentle minerality, and a clean, refreshing finish.
Molette is most commonly blended with Altesse (Roussette) or used in the production of Seyssel AOC blends—still or sparkling—where it lends freshness and finesse. Pure varietal expressions are rare, but when encountered, they display remarkable purity and finesse.
These wines pair effortlessly with local alpine cuisine, such as freshwater fish, Savoyard cheese dishes (notably fondue and raclette), or delicate starters like vegetable terrines. Molette’s freshness and discreet aromatic profile make it a perfect companion for light seafood, summer salads, and subtly flavoured poultry dishes, enhancing both traditional and modern culinary creations.
