Gamay d’Arcenant is an ancient and rare varietal, a distinct local clone of Gamay found primarily in the Burgundy region, particularly around the village of Arcenant in the Côte d’Or. This grape yields light to medium-bodied wines that display remarkable aromatic finesse. The nose typically reveals vibrant red fruit notes such as wild strawberry, raspberry, and red cherry, underscored by subtle floral undertones and a touch of white pepper. On the palate, the wines are elegantly structured with lively acidity and graceful tannins, showcasing juicy fruit flavours complemented by hints of crushed herbs and a delicate mineral finish.
Traditionally vinified as a single varietal, Gamay d’Arcenant produces fresh, aromatic reds best enjoyed in their youth, as well as charming rosés. These wines embody a purity and vivacity well-suited to lighter fare. They shine alongside charcuterie, grilled poultry, and soft cheeses, while vegetable-driven dishes, such as ratatouille or mushroom tarts, also make excellent companions. Given their natural freshness and balance, they are equally delightful served slightly chilled, emphasising their appealing fruit-forward character and enhancing their versatility at the table.
