Rolle, internationally known as Vermentino, is a distinguished white grape variety celebrated for its vibrant aromatic profile and versatility. Aromatically, it delivers expressive notes of citrus blossom, green apple, pear, and fresh herbs with delicate hints of almond or fennel. On the palate, Rolle exhibits a lively acidity complemented by a medium body, often revealing flavours of grapefruit, white peach, and a subtle saline minerality, which lends a refreshing and refined finish.
Primarily cultivated along the Mediterranean coast, Rolle finds its most notable expressions in Provence and Corsica in France, as well as in Sardinia, Liguria, and Tuscany in Italy. These coastal vineyards benefit from the temperate climate, which preserves the grape’s freshness and intricate aromas.
Rolle wines are typically produced as crisp, unoaked single-varietal whites, though they are also skilfully blended with other Mediterranean varieties. Some producers experiment with lees ageing, imparting additional texture and complexity.
Ideal food pairings include seafood dishes such as grilled fish, shellfish, and oysters, as well as Mediterranean salads, poultry, and fresh goat’s cheese. The grape’s brisk acidity and subtle savoury undertones make it a versatile companion to a variety of light, flavourful cuisines.
