Malbec, also known as Cot in its native France, is a deeply coloured red grape variety renowned for producing robust and expressive wines. Its aromatic profile is characterised by intense dark fruit aromas such as blackberry, black plum, and blueberry, complemented by nuances of violet, tobacco, cocoa, and sometimes a savoury, earthy undertone. On the palate, Malbec wines typically exhibit a full body with velvety tannins, vibrant acidity, and a lingering finish. Depending on the region and winemaking techniques, flavours can range from ripe plum and blackberry to hints of mocha, liquorice, and peppery spice.
While Malbec originates from the Cahors region in south-western France, its global reputation has soared thanks to its immense success in Argentina, particularly in Mendoza, where the grape thrives at high altitudes. Other significant regions include the Loire Valley (France), California, and increasingly, parts of Australia and Chile.
Malbec wines are typically produced as varietal reds, varying from youthful and fruit-driven to more complex, oak-aged versions. These wines pair exceptionally well with grilled and roasted red meats, especially beef and lamb, as well as mature hard cheeses and dishes with earthy or smoky elements, such as mushroom-based recipes or char-grilled vegetables.
