Red Grape Variety

Plantet is a rare French hybrid grape variety, recognised for its resilience and late ripening nature. The wines produced from Plantet tend to offer a medium intensity aromatic profile, marked by red berry notes such as raspberry and redcurrant, occasionally complemented by subtle herbal undertones and a gentle earthiness. On the palate, Plantet is typically fresh and approachable, delivering moderate acidity, light to medium body, and soft tannins. Hints of wildflowers and spice can appear, with a generally clean, fruit-driven finish.

Historically, Plantet was predominantly cultivated in the Loire Valley, as well as in parts of south-west France, where its resistance to frost and disease made it a reliable choice for local vignerons. Although its presence has diminished in recent decades, small pockets remain in traditional vineyards, particularly for regional wines and blends.

Plantet is most commonly crafted into light, easy-drinking red wines, often with an emphasis on freshness and fruit purity rather than oak influence. These wines are best enjoyed young.

For food pairings, Plantet-based wines harmonise well with casual fare including charcuterie, poultry dishes, grilled sausages, and mild cheeses, enhancing simple ingredients without overwhelming delicate flavours.
