Cordero di Montezemolo’s Barolo DOC Cuvée Gorette 2015 is a classic example of the finesse and complexity that Nebbiolo offers at its best. Sourced from the heart of the Barolo appellation, in the rolling hills of the Langhe within Piedmont, this wine is produced exclusively from Nebbiolo grapes. The 2015 vintage benefited from a warm and steady growing season, allowing for perfectly ripe fruit and tannins of remarkable elegance. After meticulous hand harvesting, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vessels followed by extended maceration on the skins to extract structure and depth. The wine is then matured for several years in large Slavonian oak barrels, which imparts subtle spice and helps the tannins integrate harmoniously.
The Barolo region, known as “the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings,” enjoys a unique microclimate where the cool Alpine breezes meet Mediterranean influences. The soils are predominantly clay and limestone, lending great minerality as well as structure—both signatures of the finest Barolos. This area is steeped in history, with viticulture dating back centuries and a commitment to traditional winemaking that continues today.
For food pairings, Barolo’s structure and aromatic profile make it a wonderful companion to robust, flavourful dishes. Classic Piedmontese options such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), truffle-infused tajarin pasta or wild mushroom risotto are all exceptional partners. The wine’s earthy, floral, and tarry notes also marry beautifully with game, aged cheeses, and rich stews. Outside the regional classics, roast duck, lamb shanks or even a mushroom Wellington would be splendid matches.
When it comes to tasting, decanting several hours in advance will help the aromas blossom and the tannins soften. Serve at a temperature of 17-18°C in large-bowled glasses to allow the bouquet and complexity of this superb 2015 Barolo to express themselves fully. With proper cellaring, this wine will continue to evolve and gain in nuance over the next decade or more.
