Viniou Reviews

The Mauro Veglio Barolo DOCG, Cuvée Arborina 2021, stands as an exemplary expression of Piedmont’s celebrated Nebbiolo grape. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grown in the Arborina cru within La Morra, this wine benefits from meticulous vineyard management and traditional vinification methods. The 2021 vintage in Piedmont was characterised by a balanced growing season, with moderate temperatures and occasional rainfall leading to optimal ripening and excellent phenolic maturity. Following a gentle maceration and fermentation, the wine is aged in oak barrels, allowing for subtle integration of tannins and the development of nuanced aromatics. The result is a wine of remarkable depth, offering aromas of rose petals, violets, red cherries, tar, and delicate hints of spice and tobacco. On the palate, the 2021 Arborina is structured yet elegant, revealing fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and a lingering, savoury finish.

Piedmont, in Italy’s north-west, is renowned for its rolling hills, misty mornings, and some of the world’s great wines. The soils of La Morra, where the Arborina cru is located, are composed of calcareous clay and marl, contributing to the wine’s finesse and aromatic complexity. The region has a storied history, with Barolo often referred to as the “King of Wines and the Wine of Kings,” celebrated since the 19th century for its longevity and noble character. The continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations, allows Nebbiolo to ripen slowly, retaining acidity and developing expressive aromas.

Barolo pairs superbly with rich, savoury dishes that can match its power and complexity. Traditional Piedmontese cuisine offers ideal partners: think brasato al Barolo (Barolo-braised beef), tajarin pasta with porcini mushrooms, or a classic risotto al tartufo. The wine also elevates game meats, aged cheeses like Castelmagno, and hearty stews.

To best appreciate the aromatic intensity and structure of this Barolo, serve it at 16-18°C. Decanting for one to two hours before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and display its full array of nuances. Enjoying it in large, tulip-shaped glasses will further enhance its expression.
