Viniou Reviews

G.D. Vajra’s Barolo DOC Coste di Rose 2018 is a captivating expression of Nebbiolo, the noble grape of Piemonte. The Coste di Rose cru is known for its fine sandy soils, lending extra elegance and floral lift to the wine. 2018, a vintage marked by a cooler, more traditional season with moderate ripening, offers an immediate accessibility along with the cellaring potential that great Barolo promises. The wine undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by an extended maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks. This meticulous elevage brings out Nebbiolo’s signature aromas of tar, rose petals, cherries, and subtle earthiness, with the Coste di Rose cuvée displaying refined tannins and an almost ethereal minerality.

The Barolo region, nestled in the rolling Langhe hills, is one of the most esteemed winegrowing areas in the world. Its unique calcareous marl soils are mixed here with sand on the Coste di Rose, delivering Barolos of particular focus and finesse. The continental climate, marked by warm summers and cold autumn nights, ensures the slow maturation necessary for Nebbiolo’s complexity. Historically, Barolo has been considered “the king of wines,” with a legacy shaped by generations of patient, skilled producers dedicated to expressing the intricacies of terroir.

Pair this wine with rich, northern Italian cuisine or classically prepared meats. Braised veal shank (ossobuco), truffle risotto, or wild mushroom pasta are natural companions. Regional specialities like tajarin with butter and sage or a platter of Castelmagno cheese are excellent choices, as their earthy depth complements the aromatic complexity of Barolo.

For optimal enjoyment, decant the wine for at least an hour to allow its bouquet to unfold. Serve slightly below room temperature, ideally at 16-18°C, where its perfume and delicately strung tannins will be most expressive. While delightful now, it will also gracefully evolve over the next decade.
