White Grapes

Žlahtina is a rare, indigenous white grape variety mainly grown on the Croatian island of Krk, particularly in the Vrbnik region, where the unique terroir imparts distinct character to the wines. Žlahtina wines are typically light-bodied and crisp, displaying a delicate aromatic profile with enticing notes of green apple, pear, quince, and subtle floral undertones. On the palate, they offer refreshing acidity, gentle minerality, and flavours of citrus, almond, and sometimes a faint saline nuance, making them vibrant and easy-drinking.

The primary region for Žlahtina cultivation is the Vrbnik area on Krk, with some plantings found in neighbouring sites along the Kvarner Bay. This grape is rarely exported, adding to its exclusivity and charm.

Žlahtina is most commonly vinified into dry, still white wines, though on occasion, it can be found as a sparkling version that highlights its naturally high acidity and freshness. These wines are excellent as an aperitif and pair beautifully with seafood, shellfish, light fish dishes, fresh cheeses, and Mediterranean salads. Their crisp character also complements subtly spiced Asian cuisine and delicate vegetable-based starters.
