Refošk is a distinctive red grape variety native to the western Balkans, notably thriving in the Slovenian coastal region of Primorska, particularly in the areas of Koper and Kras, extending into the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia. This variety is renowned for its deep, inky hue and pronounced acidity, lending itself to robust and energetic wines.
On the nose, Refošk reveals vibrant aromas of ripe black cherry, wild berries, and plum, often accompanied by subtle herbal nuances and underlying earthy tones. The palate delivers bright, mouth-watering acidity, with flavours of fresh forest fruits leading to a touch of black pepper and dried Mediterranean herbs. Its structure is typically medium-bodied, with firm yet integrated tannins and a clean, lingering finish.
Winemakers craft Refošk in a range of styles, from youthful, unoaked reds highlighting primary fruit to more structured, barrel-aged versions showcasing complexity and ageing potential. Dry styles are most common, though some semi-sweet and sparkling variations exist.
Refošk pairs exceptionally well with rich, savoury dishes. It complements grilled red meats, game, mature hard cheeses, and hearty stews, while its acidity makes it an excellent match for tomato-based dishes and traditional Mediterranean cuisine.
