Weißburgunder, known internationally as Pinot Blanc, is a refined white grape variety valued for its subtlety and elegance. In the glass, Weißburgunder expresses delicate aromas of green apple, pear, citrus blossom and nuances of almond, often accented by a gentle minerality. On the palate, it is typically medium-bodied, fresh and well-balanced, offering lively acidity and a clean, lingering finish. The flavour profile may range from crisp and dry to softly rounded, occasionally exhibiting hints of white peach and a light creaminess in texture.
This varietal thrives in Germany’s cool-climate regions such as Pfalz, Baden and Rheinhessen, as well as Austria’s Burgenland and Styria. It is also found in neighbouring Alsace and northern Italy. Weißburgunder is crafted in a variety of styles, from fresh, unoaked expressions to richer renditions aged in oak barrels. High quality examples can be found both as varietal wines and in blends, particularly in sparkling wines (Sekt).
Pair Weißburgunder with delicate dishes such as grilled fish, shellfish, poultry, light pasta, and fresh vegetable salads. Its lively acidity and restrained fruit complement freshwater fish, asparagus or mildly flavoured cheeses, making it an excellent choice for elegant, versatile food pairings.
